Who needs HIPAA Security Awareness training?

Everyone in the workforce of a covered entity or business associate, including management.

What the rules require

The HIPAA Security Rule's training standard (45 CFR 164.308(a)(5)) requires a security awareness and training program for all workforce members, including management, with four addressable specifications: security reminders, protection from malicious software, log-in monitoring and password management. Documentation is kept for six years. A 2025 proposal to overhaul the Security Rule is still only a proposal.
